Mental Health Task Force at First Congregational UCC

The Mental Health Task Force began working in January to support people experiencing mental illness and to educate the congregation on ways we can be more welcoming to those around us who struggle with mental health issues. In February , 2023, there was a presentation about becoming a WISE (Welcoming, Inclusive, Supportive and Engaged) community. A WISE designation would show that the congregation has taken the time to be educated about mental illness and has developed a plan showing how our members support people who are struggling with mental health problems. Already we’ve learned how broad the term mental health conditions can be. Obviously depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder can be included, but so can traumatic brain injury, autism and addiction. Anything that alters how the brain functions is included.

Serious and persistent mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder and major depression, are devastating both for those who have them and for their families and friends. If you know someone who has a mental health condition and you are looking for emotional and practical support, then this faith-based group, offered by NAMI Fox Valley, is designed for you. (Please note that this group is intended for people in an active caregiving relationship with a loved one who has a mental illness, not for those struggling with mental illnesses themselves.) New participants from the congregation and the wider community are welcome at any session.
